Diesel Engines Replace Gas on Wakeboard Craft - 3/4/2010 -

By Laborde Products Staff Wake World

Wakeboard vessels aren't usually powered by diesel engines, but Tasker Marine Sales in Japan was ready to try something new. Laborde Products recently supplied two Yanmar 6BY260 diesel engines to the company for its two Tigé 20V boats. The installation took place at the Tigé factory in Abilene, Texas. The results revealed excellent diesel engine performance.

"Since gas prices are significantly higher than diesel fuel, we chose these Yanmar diesel engines because they were the best fit to keep running costs low for commercial use," said Tadahiro Abe of Tasker Marine. "They have a quiet, clean exhaust and are environmentally-friendly."

Producing 260 hp at 4,000 rpm, the in-line, 4-stroke cycle Yanmar 6BY260 is water-cooled and available in both inboard and sterndrive models. Lightweight and compact, the 6-cylinder, 3-liter engine measures 45" L x 30" W x 29" H and has a dry weight of 683 lbs.

Tasker Marine was anxious to test the engine's fuel efficiency so they loaded nine adults onto the 20V and ran it at towing speed. At 60% of its power, the fuel efficiency was about 1.2 gallons per hour. The company was very impressed.

"We were very satisfied with the installation, too," said Abe. "It was our first time working with Laborde and they were a very nice mediator between Tigé and Yanmar. They honored our requests and had plenty of patience."

Both Tigé 20Vs will be used as towboats at a wakeboarding school. Tasker Marine also ordered a Yanmar 6BY260 for its own demo boat, as well as a Tigé 22i.
